Medical Mission Sister to receive humanitarian award

Sister Margaret

Sister Margaret McKenna, of the Medical Mission Sisters, will receive a humanitarian award on March 1.

Sister Margaret is being honored by the alumni of New Jerusalem, a program she founded in 1989 to aid people recovering from addiction. The ceremony will be held in the TLO Event Complex, 1621-27 Cecil B. Moore Ave.

A lifelong activist and healer, Sister Margaret has managed urban community gardens that provide food to those in need. Among her many activities, she has been a director of novices, university professor, writer, art director and peace activist.

Since founding New Jerusalem, the program has grown to include five buildings that house 20 to 25 recovering men and women who find success through the holistic community-focused model.

The Medical Mission Sisters are based at 8400 Pine Road. ••
